CTS-627: Nutritional physiology and biochemistry of oxidative stress

This research group focuses its research activity principally on the properties of virgin olive oil and its derivatives, as well as other natural antioxidants for their application, principally, in breast cancer therapeutics and mitochondrial aging. In this respect, the research group has identified antitumor effects of hydroxytyrosol (a compound derived from olive oil) in female rats with breast cancer.

In another of the lines of research of the group - paediatrics, it has discovered that the milk of mothers after a full term birth is better prepared for the antioxidant defence of the new born with respect to mothers who have premature births, at least, as regards coenzyme Q and vitamin E. These results are of interest for the preparation of infant formulas.

The research group has experience of collaboration with companies and other universities for the development of these projects.
