The study of biomineralisation processes finds practical applications that are the basis of several LEC projects: the mineralisation of collagens in the presence of proteins, crystallisation processes in corals, the structure of eggshells and the structure of fish otoliths. The LEC is also highly visible for its studies of natural pattern formation in tuffs (Liesegang, stromatolites, pyrolusite dendrites, salt volcanoes) and the formation of giant crystals.
