The research group RNM-179: Mineralogy and geochemistry of sedimentary and metamorphic environments is mainly constituted by researchers belonging to the Department of Mineralogy and Petrology of the University of Granada, Andalusian Institute of Earth Sciences, and CSIC.

The main lines of research are as follows:

- Basin analysis. Mineralogy and geochemistry of geological events. Geochemical indicators of climatic variability. Mineralogy and geochemistry of stratigraphic discontinuities.

- Special clays: industrial and pharmaceutical applications. Ceramic use of natural resources.

- Kinetics of mineralogenetic processes in the framework of petrological, geological and geomicrobiological processes.

- Study of the compositional and microtextural characteristics of biominerals, application to the determination of the influence of environmental pollution on the mineralisation of fabrics.

- Study and conservation of construction materials for architectural heritage. Behaviour of materials. Study and design of mortars.

- Phyllosilicates in the diagenesis-metamorphism transition. Electron microscopic studies of microstructures, defects and chemical composition of minerals.
