RNM-178: Evolution of the Iberian Mesozoic Margins (EMMI)

The group Evolution of the Mesozoic Margins of Iberia was created in the first call for Research Groups made by the Junta de Andalucía. Currently, its activity is mainly focused on the sedimentary analysis of basins and palaeo-environmental studies, based on the integration of ichnological, sedimentary and geochemical aspects. In this context, the research activity is of scientific, economic and social interest. From the scientific point of view, palaeo-environmental studies are particularly relevant, highlighting palaeo-climatic and palaeo-oceanographic considerations (ocean/atmosphere dynamics), as well as the characterisation of ecological and depositional parameters (e.g., degree of oxygenation, nutrients, etc.). The economic interest is mainly focused on the study of facies of interest in hydrocarbon exploration (e.g., contornites, turbidites), as well as on the influence of bioturbation on the petrophysical properties of sediments (e.g., porosity and permeability). In the social domain, research on climate, both in the fossil record and in the recent past, with implications for future changes, is highlighted. In conclusion, the research addresses challenges of great interest from an integrative and multidisciplinary approach.

The main lines of research are the following:

- Palaeobiogeography, palaeoecology, ecostratigraphy, sequence stratigraphy, cyclostratigraphy

- Invertebrate palaeontology, biostratigraphy and stratigraphic correlations

- Ichnology: ethological structures of bioturbation and bioerosion.

- Sedimentary geochemistry

- Sedimentology of detrital systems
