This research group was formed in the Animal Biology and Ecology Department of the Faculty of Sciences of Granada in 1990.

The result of research projects and collaborations with the Ministry for the Rural and Marine Environment was the development of the MEDPACS application (http://MEDPACS.ugr.es). It is a tool that allows the guidelines of the Water Framework Directive to be implemented as regards the calculation of different macroinvertebrate metrics, and to apply the Planning Instruction for the entire country (Peninsula and Balearics), with a view to the assessment and mapping of the ecological status of the rivers.

The research group established the company (spin off): HYDRAENA S.L. (www.Hydraena.com), which offers services related to environmental analysis, consultancy and reports, especially those related to aquatic ecosystems.
