Linguistic typology and contrastive linguistics: Study of the languages of the world from a contrastive perspective, with emphasis on universal or highly generalised phonetic, morphological, syntactical, semantic and pragmatic characteristics compared with other specific and particular characteristics. This inductive knowledge is then contrasted with deductive theories on language with the aim of producing a more up-to-date theory of language in relation to currently available knowledge on different languages
