Empirical research on learning is research based on observation and experimentation. Furthermore, in their experiments an independent variable is usually used. The independent variable is the factor or phenomenon that will be manipulated by the researcher to elucidate the effect that some changes will cause. The dependent variable is the means by which these changes are measured. For example, in our field, the independent variable could be the intervention with an English programme with certain characteristics. They will carry out the research systematically, designing experiments on education with the purpose of combining the quantitative aspects.
