Philosophy of Language, Semantics and Pragmatics

This line of research includes the following proposals:Development of an explanatory proposal of the meaning of some of the higher concepts that have most interested philosophers of language and logic, specialists in ethics and epistemology, and contemporary philosophy.
The concepts that the group deals with are: epistemic operators (“X believes that”, ...), alethic operators (“necessarily”, ), temporal operators (“in the past”, ...), quantifiers (“all”, ...), logical connectives (“if_then”, ...) and normative operators (“it is true that”, ...).
Characteristic features and role of the metaphor in verbal communication. Explanation of the various inferential processes that allow different types of utterances (metaphorical, metonymic, elliptical, etc.).
Dynamic and normative focus on the formation and determination of concepts in the course of discursive practices.
Diagrammatic representation of natural discourse. This is a dynamic and different approach to discourse according to which the meaning of an expression would be characterised not in terms of a potential change of context (as occurs in the discourse representation theory; DRT), but of a potential change of diagram.

  • Semantic/pragmatic distinction and interrelation. The aim is to connect ideas from the domains of formal linguistics, philosophy and cognitive psychology, with a view that offers an interdisciplinary explanation of lexical semantics.
