The Andalusian accent: a form of social discrimination
Our project intends to examine the extent to which Andalusian men and women may suffer discrimination by virtue of their accents and way of pronouncing. It is clear that there is a great variety of Andalusian accents in the different provinces, which also have specific local characteristics. However, our study does not intend to analyse linguistic aspects but rather focuses on the social implications of the way Andalusian people speak, as the men and women themselves perceive this. Likewise, we intend to identify specific cases in which pronunciation has hindered professional advancement and situations of discrimination due to accent. We shall work with a population sample that is sufficiently diversified in terms of sex, age, professional level and social class.
