HUM-740: Memory and Development

The group’s aim is to undertake research on memory and language. More specifically, the group researches the cognitive mechanisms whereby we control our thoughts, memories and also language. This interest includes the study of these processes among the normal population, but extends also to the deterioration of these mechanisms with ageing and in patients with schizophrenia, and how they are used by bilingual people for controlling the use of their two languages. This study is carried out by means of behavioural measurements such as reaction time or accuracy of response. Eye movement recording and electrophysiological recording of cortical activity are also used. The group is made up of a university professor, a senior lecturer, a temporary lecturer with a doctorate, three temporary pre-doctoral lecturers and nine pre-doctoral scholarship-holders. One very important aim of the group is to train its pre-doctoral scholarship holders in research. The group meets once a week to discuss results, plan experiments and read articles. The group is financed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation (Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN)) and the Autonomous Government of Andalusia and collaborates with the Hospital de San Agustín in Linares and with several centres and nursing homes.
