The group was created on 01/01/1995 in order to incorporate researchers who had been working in the Physical Anthropology Laboratory of the University of Granada since its formation in 1972.

Their main lines of research are: Human evolution, Physical anthropology, Forensic anthropology, Biodemography, Paleopathology, Paleoecology and Human ecology; Biological characterisation of Mediterranean populations; New methodologies for the identification of human remains, and handling and taphonomy of human skeletal remains.

Some of its members form part of International and Expert Committees on human identification. As such, they have prepared expert reports and coordinate forensic anthropological identification in Chile, and research on human evolution in Cuba, Brazil, Mexico and Spain.
